Volunteer
Two unique features of the Adult Learning Center are:
- A strong focus on one-to-one instruction
- Over 100 volunteer tutors, who bring with them years of teaching and tutoring experience each week
Tutors choose the day and time they wish to serve each week. You may choose one day (or more)! Monday through Thursday (we are always closed Friday). Our regular program runs from September through May.

What is “Online” Tutoring?
We are offering live, online learning experiences to our students this school year, led by a certified GED instructor, and supported by live, online tutors. All tutors are fully trained - not only in using the video conferencing and screen sharing technology required to make all of this work, but also trained in the finer points of Adult Basic Education tutoring. Our veteran volunteers who have already been engaging in online tutoring this summer join in the training sessions to share their first-hand experiences and answer any questions new volunteers may have.
ALC staff will also offer on-site tech training for smaller groups of students who don't have either the hardware, or the digital literacy skills to engage in remote learning on their own. Any on-site student interaction is by appointment only. Masks are required, and the building is professionally cleaned daily. All in-house work spaces are properly distanced, such as our computer labs and open-space areas. On-site students will still engage in online learning with ALC teachers and tutors, at the same time as students who are working remotely.
